FORMULATE A PINK WHIPPED SUGAR SCRUB

ABOUT THE WHIPPED SUGAR SCRUB FORMULA
Today I have an exciting formula for you. I have to say I am a bit embarrassed because this formulation is long overdue. I had a lovely chat with a group member about this product, and I promised I’d publish a post on it. It was last year! Ugh. My apologies for the delay.
The product has SCI ( Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate) powder and it allows the scrub to hold its whipped shape. Also, it is a gentle surfactant especially if you compare it with other powdered surfactants. I paired it with Cocamidopropyl betaine and Decyl glucoside, both of which are surfactants, to keep it gentle and provide good foaming power.
It also contains a high amount of glycerin, but don’t let that scare you. It is a wash-off product and your skin will be OK with it.
I wanted some emollients in the scrub so I added some superfatting agents ( these are modified lipids). You can add simple carrier oils if you want, but for me, Lamesoft PO65 works very well.
I know you will want to know where the gorgeous pink comes from, so I’ll tell you. I found a Purple Sweet Potato powder on Amazon. It is a food-grade ingredient, but that never stops me from trying :). ( Link below)
I think this product is best to be made in bigger batches. I made a version using Kitchen Aid for whipping and another with a simple mixer. I think the Kitchen Aid did a better job, the scrub is fluffier and softer a bit. It really comes down to what equipment you have for this.
I hope you will like this formula. If you have any further questions, please come and talk to me in the Private Facebook group.
HOW TO USE THE SUGAR SCRUB
Apply on wet skin in the shower. Massage it into the skin allowing the sugar to do its exfoliating job. Rinse well and moisturise.
POSSIBLE SOURCES
This is where I purchased my ingredients:
- SCI powder – INCI: Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate
- Chelator – INCI: sodium phytate, water, alcohol

Method:
1. Weigh Phase A and add Phase B. Heat to 75-80°C until liquid/ paste-like.
2. Allow it to cool a bit and add Phase C. Stir till homogenous.
3. Leave it to cool until the paste is hardened and start whipping it.
4. Add Phase D and continue whipping until it is soft and fluffy.
5. Add Phase E and blend, followed by Phase F.
6. Check and adjust pH if needed. Final pH to be 5.0-6.5.
TIPS:
- If you are using fragrances, reduce the amount to 0.2-0.5% as they are strong.
- Instead of Lamesoft, you can add carrier oils.
- pH should be around 5.0-6.5. My sample had a pH of 5.1, so no adjustment was needed.
